CarbiCrete Teams Up with Meta to Drive Sustainable Concrete Solutions
CarbiCrete, a pioneering leader in sustainable construction, has entered a strategic collaboration with Meta to accelerate the adoption of its low-carbon concrete technology. This partnership marks a significant step forward in reducing emissions from one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries.
The collaboration focuses on carbon financing, enabling the installation of CarbiCrete’s cutting-edge equipment at Canal Block, a block-making facility in Ontario, and expanding the equipment capacity at Patio Drummond in Quebec. CarbiCrete’s patented technology replaces traditional cement with a steel-making by-product, removing the need for cement and thereby eliminating the associated emissions. Additionally, the technology captures carbon dioxide and mineralises it into the concrete, ensuring the CO2 remains permanently stored. The partnership will be supported by 3Degrees, a climate solutions provider and CarbiCrete’s long-term ally, which will be responsible for verifying and quantifying the emissions reductions produced by CarbiCrete’s decarbonised concrete process. This collaboration will ensure that carbon credits generated from the technology are properly verified and monetised, allowing the environmental benefits to be scaled and sustained.
Jacob Homiller, CEO of CarbiCrete, described the collaboration as a “win-win scenario,” emphasising that the accelerated deployment of their technology will have an immediate impact on reducing emissions throughout the concrete supply chain. This partnership also makes cement-free concrete materials more widely available to the construction industry, driving further sustainability in the sector. Meta’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 makes the partnership with CarbiCrete a strategic move in its broader climate action strategy. Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy at Meta, stated that decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like concrete is essential to reaching their emissions targets. He emphasised that collaborations with companies like CarbiCrete are crucial to advancing this technology and scaling its impact. Mark Mondik, Vice President of Carbon Markets at 3Degrees, noted the potential of carbon finance in driving decarbonisation across supply chains, showcasing how the partnership could help lead the way for similar industry-wide solutions.
